My Cat Story 1.0
“It must be nice to have a cat” I said.
“I guess so” he replied.
Everything was unplanned. It all started when I casually told my husband that it would be “nice” to have a cat around, and almost magically, one of his friends were looking for someone to take care of his cat, and we said yes. Naturally.

It is snowing the night we arrived at our new home, barely settled. We are both exhausted from the 6 hour drive and carrying our belonging inside. Everything is still everywhere; no gas (heater), table, internet. Thank god for futons, we fall asleep in no time amidst the freezing cold.

Saturday, the day we have been looking forward to. Today is the day we pick up our soon-to-be-cat. After having late lunch, we start our 2 hour drive to Gunma. We could not stop talking about it in the car. It’s our first time taking care of an animal in Japan. We’re both excited and nervous.
When we arrive I immediately see it. Long body, dark fur with stripes and a long tail. It’s a male cat and he’s only almost 2 years old. He’s busy looking for his white furry toy, and when he finds it beside the couch, he fetches it with his mouth and giddily walks back to his owner. Adorable.
The owner is kind to serve us food. After about 2 hours chatting, we are ready to say goodbye and return home. I can see how much love they have for this cat they call Jojo and how sad they are having to let him go.
We begin our journey back, now with a new addition at the backseat.
He is quiet in the beginning, curious. But starts meowing frantically when the car moves faster, so I take him to the front seat and place him on my lap. The rest of the journey is quiet. Here we are, the three of us, starting a new life at a new place.
We named him Tommy. And the days ahead became far greater than just “nice”.
