Last Saturday I had the chance to accompany my mom to one of the Child Welfare Homes in my hometown. They were organizing activities for the kids and my mom was handling the food so we went there with 100++ pax of nasi ayam and additional KFC Buckets. The car smelled good, obvs.
We arrived at noon, just in time for their lunch. The kids were already seated in the dining hall with their food trays and their faces were beaming when we arrived. We then swiftly distributed fried chicken according to their preferences (some wanted spicy, wing etc).
I was excited because this is my first time, and I realized so much things. You see, most of these kids are not orphans. They had parents, but were abandoned, abused or molested. It really breaks my heart to think of it. How can you hurt a little child that has no idea of what’s happening, and barely knows the world? I just couldn’t imagine the pain these kids went through. No kids should be treated poorly, no matter what the circumstances are. There were even babies.. But Alhamdulillah the place is so much better to live in compared to the outside. They have meals 5x per day, proper classes and good surrounding.

It struck me of how ungrateful I could be at times. Going there made me realize I have taken so much for granted. Sure, Allah didn’t give me everything, I do have problems here and there. But I am grateful to have food on my plate, my own bedroom and ability to work for what I want. To us, it’s normal life. But to some, it’s a privilege. Being thankful opens more doors than you think.
Holy Quran
“…Anyone who is grateful does so to the profit of his own soul…” (31:12 )
